Vanuatu to send an U. 21 team to the Junior World Cup Qualifiers, Gold Coast
The Vanuatu Hockey Federation (VHF) is excited to announce the selected team for the Junior World Cup Qualifiers, to be held in Gold Coast, Australia this coming February.
After bringing home the bronze medal from the Oceania Pacific Cup in Fiji this past December, the team is rallied and preparing for a new and exciting challenge.
The VHF will be sending a team of 15 players and two train on coaches to the Junior World Cup Qualifiers. This tournament is an international sanctioned event, giving the boys a chance to qualify for the Junior World Cup in India later this year.
The tournament will be a fantastic experience for the boys, with a training camp to be organized prior to the event with North Coast Academy of Sport, working with national Australian players and International coaches. Players will be put up in home stays with Australian hockey families, but will still need to work with the VHF to raise enough money for their flights and visas.
Of the open national team that represented Vanuatu in Fiji, seven boys qualified to compete in the U.21 competition. Eight new players have been selected based on their skill and commitment, and have already slotted well into the squad.
National Coach Peter Robinson, who has recently returned after intrusive oral surgery and a bad bout of diarrhea, is ecstatic to see the new talent and high standard of the team. “I am confident the boys will impress” comments Coach Robinson.
“Hockey is still a relatively small sport in Vanuatu, but the talent that is emerging show how much potential we have,” says VHF President George Kalkaua. “We are glad to have Coach Robinson back on board after a fantastic year in 2012. We are confident he can get the boys up to their potential.”
