2012 Oceania Pacific Cup News - Full Field Nerves

For Vanuatu women, this was our first ever time to play on a full sized field, with our field back at home smaller than a quarter of a normal hockey field. However, this young team stood up to the challenge with a strong heart and a hunger to learn and improve.

Our first games against the more experienced Fiji, Aus country and NZ Maori proved a great learning curve. For a team of girls, many who had started playing hockey just six months before - we always knew it was going to be tough. But despite our lack of experience, we proved that we had the skill, speed and dedication to be a fierce competitor in the future.

The womens first game against the formidable Fiji, was a test of both our mental and physical strength. The strongest of the Pacific nations, the experience of the Fiji, especially on the full sized field proved to be one of our greatest challenges. However the girls fought valiantly, coming out with their first international goal, an outstanding effort by sticker Christina Sam to finish the score at 16-1.

Tough matches against Australia Country and New Zealand Maori put pressure on the girls physical strength and ability to recover. “These girls have never played at such an intense standard for such an extended period of time. Back to back games each day has really forced the girls to push through physical barriers and injuries to continue playing – it has truly been a testament to their dedication and commitment to their team” comments Women´s team manager Relvie Poilapa.

The Girls are looking forward to playing fellow island countries PNg and Samoa in the next few days.
