A First for Vanuatu Hockey

For the first time in Vanuatu Sporting History, Vanuatu will be sending a women’s hockey team to compete in an official international tournament.

On Sunday 9th December, the team of 15 women athletes left Port Vila International Airport, bound for Suva, Fiji to compete in the Oceania Pacific Cup.

For the past few years, Vanuatu has been able to send a men’s team to compete in the tournament against pacific countries including Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. Last year all competing countries were able to field both a men’s and a women’s team – except for Vanuatu, leaving a space that needed to be filled.

In 2012, the Vanuatu Hockey Federation (VHF) was determined to focus on Women’s Development in the sport. VHF Secretary, Relvie Poilapa, says it is important that women in Vanuatu are given the same opportunities to compete in sport as the boys. “Hockey is a sport that can be played by everyone. It is important that girls are given the chance to not only participate, but to work towards playing at an elite and competitive level” says Poilapa.

The National Womens team is made up of women from all around Efate, including villages Saama and Tanoliu, Mele and a range of communities around Port Vila. As the sport continues to grow, more girls are being given to opportunity to participate and get involved.

For a number of the girls, their trip to Fiji will be the first time they have left Vanuatu. For all, playing on a full sized hockey field will be completely new experience. Many of the players selected have

The Oceania Pacific Cup is an exciting new opportunity to represent Vanuatu for the first ever time in an International Hockey tournament. The VHF wishes the team the best of luck and hopes the team come back with a wealth of experience.

Preparations are under way for Oceania Intercontinental cup in Sydney Australia.The Mens team will be hoping to go more better than the silver they won at last year in world league round 1! Team to be announced soon! Hopefully both Men and Women team will be competed in the tournament.
