National Mens and Womens Team Annouced
After a month of intense training and fitness, the final mens and womens national teams have been selected. Out of an initial training squad, 14 men and 13 women were selected in the final team to represent Vanuatu in the Oceania Pacific Cup in Suva, Fiji in December this year.
The final cut proved to be extremely difficult, with several players improving dramatically throughout the past few months.
“It was great to such a vast amount of improvement from the boys – especially those coming down from Tanoliu and Saama” noted national men’s coach Peter Robinson.
Last year was the boys first official international tournament and was a great learning curve. “This year our team has grown in strength, skill and experience. I am confident with the final athletes we have selected and am looking forward to competing for a medal in Fiji” says Robinson.
For the women, this will be their first ever international experience and a great chance to represent Vanuatu in Hockey. The girls have trained extremely hard, and it is evident in the improvements they have made.
This is an exciting step for the Vanuatu Hockey Federation, who hope the participation of the women at the Pacific Cup will encourage more girls and women in Vanuatu to get involved in the future.
“Our women’s team is young, fit, and ready to learn” Says VHF president George Kalkoua. “This will be a fantastic opportunity for them, and we know the girls will put in a strong effort and gain a wealth of experience.”
With the final teams selected, intense training is scheduled for the next month before the athletes set of for Suva, Fiji in December.
So far the teams have been greatly supported by a number of businesses and organizations including VASANOC and the Vanuatu Women’s Association for Sport. Local businesses WIlco and Air Vanuatu have also recently jumped on board as official sponsors of the teams, which the VHF is extremely grateful for.
