PHP success with a Coach the Coaches Workshop

The Vanuatu Hockey Federation (VHF) developed the Pikinini Hockey Program (PHP) at the beginning of 2012, to encourage hockey at a grassroots level into schools around Efate. After only six months in action, the program has achieved some great results, implementing a fun, healthy and sustainable plan into schools curriculums.

To assist schools in developing an ongoing hockey program, PHP has identified the need to build the capacity of local school teachers, passing on skills and knowledge for them to use in the future. “Training the teachers is the best chance of making our program sustainablem” says VHF President George Kalkaua. To apply this, one of Australia’s top Hockey coaches, John Mowat was invited to Port Vila to run a coaching clinic last week.

Mowat ran a three day intensive course, going through the basics rules and structure of hockey. The course was attended by over 40 eager teachers from schools including Freswota, Sorovanga, Tanilou and Kawenu. “It was great to see such an enthusiastic and attentive group of coaches willing to try and learn skills in a game that is foreign to most,” says Mowat.

His program is designed to give teachers valuable coaching tools and techniques to implement regular hockey programs at their schools, giving children the chance to continue and improve their skills. “I am confident they will be able to take back their new found knowledge and introduce hockey into their school successfully.”

The Pikinini Hockey Program has been made possible through support from the Australia Sports Outreach Program and the Australian High Commission. Hockey Australia, and Oceania Hockey have also been great assets in developing and improving the PHP throughout Efate, giving children and teachers the chance to be involved in this exciting game.
