MARIST Brothers' High School (MBHS) retained the boy's Under-19 title in the Twisties National Secondary Schools Basketball Championship at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday. The Flagstaff-based school defeated arch-rivals Latter Day Saints (LDS) 61-29 to make it second year in a row.

In the girl's U19 showdown, defending champions Adi Cakobau were not so lucky after they went down fighting 19-30 to LDS. ACS missed the services of skipper Milika Koyamainavure, who is away with the national team at the Pacific Games in Noumea, New Caledonia.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said they were impressed with the intensity of competition.

He said the participating 17 schools displayed some top level performance indicating the level of sport had gradually improved in the past one year.

"Also the atmosphere has been quite intense and we are pleased to note the increase in support from the families and fans that flocked to cheer their respective teams."

Meanwhile, debutante Raiwaqa Youths claimed the boys and girls U15 title beating MBHS 27-24 and Saint Joseph's (SJSS) 23-7 respectively.

MBHS had a close win over newcomers Nadi International 34-31 in the U17 boys final while the U17 girl's title went to Yat Sen which overcame SJSS 18-14.
