Micro Games 2018 Basketball Semifinals is Set

YAP -- The Semifinals cast of the Micro Games 2018 is set with Guam, Palau, Pohnpei and the Marshall Islands qualifying both their men's and women's teams in the region's most prestigious basketball competition being held in Yap, Micronesia.

In the Men's Quarterfinal round results; Guam eliminated Chuuk 95-56, Pohnpei eliminated Kosrae 84-77, Palau eliminated Yap, 89-70 and RMI eliminated CNMI 97-81.

Guam will lock horns with Palau at 5:00 pm while Pohnpei will battle RMI at 7:00 pm to determine the finalists on Tuesday (July 22).

"The level of competition has improved from the last Micro Games. Teams are more competitive and structured," said Palau coach Men’s Coach Ziske Asanuma .

Palau will clash with defending gold medalist and in form Guam in the Semifinals round but Asanuma is undeterred and believes they have a chance against the region's powerhouse squad.

"I think our squad and Marshall Islands can give Guam a good game. What Palau lacks in height they make up in speed and craftiness," said Asanuma.

In the Women's Quarterfinal matches; Guam had a bye in the round while Pohnpei eliminated CNMI 70-59, Palau eliminated Yap 74-28 and RMI eliminated Chuuk 88-23.

RMI will face-off with Palau in the 3:00 pm game while Guam will match-up with Pohnpei at 5:00 pm on the same day as the Men's Semifinal round.

"Unfortunately the women’s competition has not improved. Guam and Marshall islands are strong and look like they play in regular competition but all the other teams have not improved," lamented Palau women's coach Logan Ngirou

"I think that the lack of women’s competitions in the islands is evident by the level of the women’s competition at these games and something each of the NF’s need to work on," he added.

Defending champions Guam held court in both divisions with a dominant performance en route to the Semifinal round.

Guam's teams both finished with an immaculate record in the Group stages with the Men's team boasting dominant wins over Palau (77-61), Kiribati (72-47), Pohnpei (81-61) and CNMI (106-66) while the Women's squad also held court with victories over Palau (77-41), Chuuk (101-17) and Pohnpei (74-55).
