VFL Sunday recap: Round 21

Geelong’s 35-point victory over Port Melbourne today sealed a double-chance for Footscray in the Peter Jackson VFL Legendairy Finals Series and means both the Cats and the Borough face elimination finals next week.

The 2016 qualifying final match-ups are:
-    Casey Scorpions (1st) vs Footscray (4th) at Casey Fields; and
-    Collingwood (2nd) vs Williamstown (3rd) at Ikon Park.

The 2016 elimination final match-ups are:
-    Geelong (5th) vs Essendon (8th) at North Port Oval; and
-    Port Melbourne (6th) vs Sandringham (7th) at North Port Oval.

The full schedule for Week 1 of the Legendairy Finals Series will be released later tonight.

In Sunday’s other match, Werribee prevailed by 20 points over Sandringham and sent the Zebras into their elimination final with six losses in their last seven games.

Telling facts: The Cats came out on a mission against the Borough, with slick ball movement helping them pile on the first seven goals of the contest at VU Whitten Oval. Geelong led by 48 points by the main break and continually frustrated an improved Port Melbourne’s forward forays in the second half to ensure both teams will now play in elimination finals.

WERRIBEE 14.10 (94) d SANDRINGHAM 10.14 (74)

Form: Werribee – W L L L W / Sandringham – L W L L L

Telling facts: Sandringham limped towards an elimination final with its sixth loss in the last seven rounds against Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval. The Tigers were never headed by the inaccurate Zebras from late in the first quarter and ultimately finished the season in 11th position.
