57 cm. added !
On Day 4 of the Athletics (25/09/09), Raobu hit a big one with his first push out to 13.77m. For the frst two rounds, this kept him in bronze medal place, but he finished a partly-satisfied 4th.
George Pine found inspiration after his disappointing Long Jump yesterday. In the MHigh Jump he started at the opening height of 1.60m. and went clear to 1.80m., his first time over this height. Remarkably he cleared 1.83m. with his second attempt and this eventually put him in 6th. place on count-back from 5th.
BETERU only 0.02 outside his record.
In the straight Final of the M110m. Hurdles, Beteru Ateri came 0.02 seconds from equalling his own NR for the event, set two years ago. His time in Rarotonga was 16.82 seconds. Considering the quality of his preparation and lack of racing this year, this was an amazing performance !
RUTI close to a repeat.
Next up, Ruti Ioneba ran with confidence in the W1500m. Final, taking 15 seconds off her PB and again finishing in 4th. place. She clocked 5-36.85. This is the fastest time by a Kiribati athlete since 2001 and was less than seven seconds outside the NR.
Derin Pendle ran his second-fastest M5000m. in placing 10th. in the Final in 19-36.38.
Kaitinano Mwemweata jumped a 2009 best of 9.36m. with her final effort in the WTriple Jump. This was enough to place her 4th.
PERFORMANCE SUMMARY.
So far the I-Kiribati athletes have collected two National Records and three other PBs. They have manged four FOURTH places, tantalisingly close to our first-ever Mini Games Athletics medal. We have four more events tomorrow, the final day of Athletics.
