HMAS GOORANGAI was a 223-ton auxiliary minesweeper, initially built as a trawler. She was the first Australian ship sunk in WWII, in a collision with MV DUNTROON in Port Phillip on 20th November 1940. All hands were lost when she sunk within a minute.
The race is run annually from Royal Brighton YC to Queenscliff in memory of HMAS Goorangai and her crew.
