2017 Musto QLD Youth Week Regatta Wrap Up

7 GRSC sailors and their families made the long trek up the Pacific Hwy this past week to the Royal Qld Yacht Squadron to compete in the 2017 MUSTO QLD Youth Week Championships. This venue will also be the venue for the Optimist and Laser National Championships in Dec/Jan later this year.

In true and typical fashion at this time of the year, it was a fairly light wind regatta overall and at least on 1 day, we had no racing at all! Still, it came good on the last day with enough breeze to allow for 4 races and 8 overall in the regatta.

I am really pleased to report some great results and achievements from our GRSC squad, all of which had a fantastic time.

OPTIMIST GREEN FLEET

Brodie Ewings was the sole GRSC sailor in Green Fleet who did more than just racing. The Green Fleet had some great adventures over the 4 days including windsurfing lessons, island visits and training/racing Opti’s. We hardly saw Brodie all week! As far as the racing goes, Brodie smashed it winning all races and finishing 1st overall from 9 boats. Fantastic stuff Brodie and he has also managed to keep the Green Fleet 1st place award at GRSC with Ben doing the same last year at this same event!

OPTIMIST INTERMEDIATE FLEET

Our rapidly improving Intermediate stars in Cameron, Ben and Hannah were involved in some very close and hotly contested racing all week. A strong 28 boat fleet saw some great racing and I am very pleased to say that our 3 sailors all finished in the Top 10. Not only that, but GRSC was the winning club in Intermediate Fleet despite the home club RQYS having 12 sailors. A great result. Some notable achievements during the regatta included Ben placing Top 5 in 5 races, Cameron 4 races in the Top 5 and Hannah 3 races in the Top 5 (and 1st Girl)

Final placings in the regatta were as follows:

Ben 5th – 36 points
Hannah 6th – 41 points (and 1st Girl)
Cameron 8th – 48 points

OPTIMIST OPEN FLEET

Like our Intermediate fleet, our Open Fleet sailors Ryan, Ava and Josh were in a fleet of 34 sailors battling it out in some great racing. Some impressive achievements to note including Josh with 3 races in the Top 5 and a further 4 in the Top 10, Ava with 1 race in the top 5 and 3 in the Top 15 and Ryan 2 races in the Top 15.

Final placings in the regatta were as follows:

Josh 5th – 41 points
Ava 15th – 105 points (and 3rd Girl)
Ryan 20th – 129 points

Laser 4.7

Finally over in Laser land, we had Daniel competing with 34 boats in his final hit out before he leaves for the World Championships in Belgium this coming Saturday. It was a particularly strong field with the majority of the team travelling with Daniel in attendance. Daniel sailed well and highlights included 1 Top 5, 1 Top 10 and 4 Top 15 finishes from 8 races. He finished 14th overall. Good luck Daniel over in Belgium and learn heaps from the experience that it will be!
