2017 East Coast Championships Wrap Up by Chris Costandi

Ben Costandi - 2nd Place Intermediate
Ava Whitten - 1st Girl Open Fleet
Josh Whitten - 2nd place Open Fleet

A superb effort by many of our GRSC sailors at this weekend's East Coast Championships which also resulted in GRSC being awarded the Ken Beashel "Best Performing Club" trophy! more on that later!

But before we get into recognising the sailors efforts, I am going to first recognise all the GRSC parents who put in a great and committed effort over the 2 days. Thank you for all you do, not just at this regatta but many others and each weekend. Thank you everyone! Legend team!

So back to the ECC regatta. Whilst the 2nd and final day was unfortunately a total fizzer of a day with no wind, it was great to see some fantastic performances on Day 1 by many of our sailors and which ultimately resulted in final places being decided.

In Green Fleet Optimist class, we had Tobie Smith out there and in his new Optimist for the first time. Tobie did very well with 1st place, 2nd place and 4th place finishes from 9 in the fleet. Tobie was also called out and recognised by Green Fleet coach Connor Campbell at presentation for always being on the start line and racing so well. Well done Tobie!

In the Intermediate Fleet Optimist class, 3 of our sailors (Ben, Hannah and cameron), finished in the Top10 from 28 boats in the fleet. Wow!

Congratulations to Ben Costandi for finishing 2nd overall with two 2nd places. Also special recognition to Brodie and Matt for their 1st Intermediate fleet regatta! Final placings:

2nd place Ben Costandi
8th place Hannah Kernohan
9th place Cam Scade
20th place Brodie Ewings
23rd place Matt Kernohan

In the Open Fleet Optimist class, we had 2 sailors (Josh and Ava) in the top 10 (from 24 boats). Congratulations to Josh Whitten for finishing 2nd overall (from 24 boats) with two 2nd places. Final placings:

2nd place Josh Whitten
7th place Ava Whitten (and 1st girl award)
18th place Ryan Ewings

and for our Belgium bound Worlds team representative Daniel Costandi, a good result finishing just outside the top 3 in 4th overall in the 4.7's (from 12 boats) with the highlight being two 1st places finishes in the first 2 races. Many of this fleet were his world squad team mates going to Belgium, so a good hit out for them on Day 1.

The last and very proud moment we had as a club was when we were announced winners of the "Ken Beashel" Top Performing Club at this regatta. This was a fantastic reward for our club sailors who have been putting in the hard work and really hitting their straps in recent times.
