GRSC shines in the Nations Capital (by Karen Murray)

Well, as they said we did get all wind conditions in Canberra on the weekend. It was awesome to see so many families making the trek to Canberra and supporting each other.

Representing the GRSC Opti Squad in Opens were Josh and Ryan, in Intermediates we had Ava, Hayley, Ben C, Hannah, Ben K and Ellen. And in Green fleet we had Cameron, Mathew and Brodie.

On Saturday after sitting and waiting for wind for what seemed hours in the optis the kids were sent ashore, some had barely made it and the wind arrived. The racing was on again, with Opens and Intermediates completing 2 races.

Sunday was a completely different day with winds over 25kts in the first race of the day and the intermediates were sent back to shore. Opens continued racing with some spectacular downwinds. After some confusion over whether racing was finished and many intermediates packing up their boats to head home. Racing for the intermediates was back on with approx 15 of the 45 boats returning to the water for what appeared to be more manageable winds. But Lake Burley Griffin delivered some impressive winds again this time over 30kts. Over the day Opens completed 4 races and intermediates 2.

Opens had Josh and Ryan finishing with some fantastic results of 13th and 17th respectively.

In Intermediates an extremely smiley Ava Whitten received a treasure chest of goodies with her well deserved Sportsmanship award and coming 2nd overall in Intermediates and 1st female what a fantastic achievement. Congratulations Ava. I'm sure Josh is still trying to get his hands on some of the goodies. Ellen finished a fantastic 9th overall in her first intermediate regatta with a highlight of 3rd on day 1, and a rather spectacular finish to the last race on day 2 which involved a capsize on the finish line and finishing the race hanging onto the outside of her boat. Amazingly she didn't loose a place. Next we had Hayley at an amazing 13th in the regatta, with a fantastic 5th in race 2. Little Ben C managed a tough fight against the big winds and a brilliant finish of 14th overall. Ben K came in close at 17th at the regatta and Hannah was caught up in many a battle with wayward opti's with a great 31st overall. It's truly amazing what all of you have achieved and we are all in awe of your courage.

Green fleet were able to get out and do some racing on both days. It was great to see the kids buddy up and help each other get ready and launch boats.

What an amazing group of people to share the experience with. Thanks to everyone, parents and sailors, for their help driving trailers, loading boats, rigging, launching, great food and company.
