Optimist Club Racing Opening Weekend

What a great turn out we had for our opening round of the new season with up to 8 sailors from our newly formed GRSC Opti Squad comprising Intermediate and Open Fleet sailors, and also 4 of our exciting Tackers prospects also in attendance. It was great to see all the excited faces and high energy around the place and GRSC was once again ‘buzzing’ with the sounds of Opti Kids. Even the local dolphins came out to see what all the commotion was about and what a sight that was!

Following a welcome to all by yours truly, we welcomed Caitlin Tames to our club from NB Sail Sports who would take them out for 2 hours of training. Our sailors thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it was great to see them brushing up on their skills and knowledge. Upon return from training, the kids had a well deserved break and lunch before preparing for racing with a briefing by Tim. Following this, our RO held everyone ashore for a short while before we finally got underway with racing at around 2.15pm

Race 1 was most interesting with hail pelting down just before the start sequence and I am sure the kids loved that! Race 1 got underway in some fairly good 10-12 knot breeze and then the kids came across some significant wind gusts at the top mark hitting around 20+ knots which certainly tested them.  The following 2 races were in more consistent 8-10 knots of breeze and we saw some very close racing throughout both Intermediate and Open Fleets. A solid start to the season by Hayley in Intermediates winning all 3 races on Sunday and Joshua for winning 2 of the 3 in Open. Well done to all sailors and it was great to see our Opti Squad back racing. Results will be updated shortly in Score It and I shall be sending the link in a separate email.

Special thanks to Andrew our RO, Michelle RO Assistant and a big thank you to Daniel (who had this Sunday off from Laser training at RSYS), for his help with flags on the start boat

Plenty of Photos to share from the weekend, so enjoy!

Next weekend (October long weekend), ofcourse sees us all involved in the NSW Youth Championships at our club where close to 250 sailors will be attending. A massive weekend ahead for us all and I want to take this early opportunity to thank you all in advance for your help and efforts over the coming weekend.

Good luck to all our sailors representing GRSC including:

Ryan, Joshua, Ben C, Ava, Ben K, Hannah, Hayley, Ellen, Ari and maybe even our latest and newest member Cameron in the Optimist Class and also Daniel in the Laser class as well? Do your club proud young champions!

Chris Costandi

Optimist Class Captain
