GRSC 2018 Annual Presentation Night
Saturday May 19th 6.30pm for 7pm start
Over 300 sailors from all over the country and across 11 youth classes competed in what was a great spectacle indeed. It was a very well run regatta with an enormous army of volunteers making the long weekend run very smoothly and enjoyable for all. Well done to South Lake Macquarie Amateur Sailing Club and supporting clubs Mannering Park and Wangi for a great effort.
GRSC had 8 Opti sailors (Ryan, Ava and Josh in the Open Fleet, and then Ben, Hannah, Cameron, Matt and Brodie in the Intermediate Fleet), and over on the Laser course, we had Daniel flying the flag as well for GRSC in the Laser 4.7’s.
The first day of racing saw some decent wind allowing the event organisers to run a maximum of 4 races which was great. This was followed by 3 races on the Sunday and then 2 races on the last day on Monday under lighter conditions.
Once again and in keeping with recent great performances on the regatta circuit, GRSC had some great results and a BIG congratulations to all our sailors for competing in this regatta.
Optimist Open Fleet saw an impressive 56 boats competing and it was a case of the interstate competitors dominating 4 of the Top 5 spots in a hotly contested battle. Our GRSC sailors held their own sailing very well and all finished in the top half of the fleet:
Josh Whitten 15th
Ava Whitten 21st
Ryan Ewings 28th
Optimist Intermediate Fleet – Also had a great showing with 41 boats competing and once again our sailors continued their recent great form in regattas with impressive great placings as follows:
Cameron Scade 4th
Hannah Kernohan 10th
Ben Costandi 13th
Brodie Ewings 20th
Matt Kernohan 24th
Cameron was very surprised when he was called up to the stage to collect his trophy for actually being the ‘first boy’ in Intermediate fleet. We think this was a first as we are used to seeing a ‘first girl’ trophy being awarded, however the first 3 place getters this weekend were girls and so Cam picked up the first boy award! Well done Cameron.
and over on the Laser course in his 4.7 was Daniel Costandi competing against 24 sailors from around the country including the current QLD and National female champion in Kristen Wadley and fellow sailor that Daniel sailed with over in Belgium at the Worlds. Very pleased to report that Daniel finished 3rd overall and on the podium after a tough battle all weekend in the top 3. It came down to the last race between 2nd and 3rd place and others very close behind, but he kept his cool and managed to retain his overall 3rd place. Well done Daniel!
For our 2 medal winners in Cameron and Daniel… they were surprised (as we all were), to have current Olympic Laser Gold Medalist Tom Burton in attendance and award them their medals… a real treat and nice way to finish off the weekend for sure.
Again, well done to all GRSC sailors for some great performances. What a great way to kick start the season ahead and we look forward to seeing you all back this weekend for club champ racing.
