South Hobart have secured the 2017 PS4 NPL Tasmania League Title with a 5-0 win over the Kingborough Lions at Darcy Street. The win puts South Hobart 12 points clear on top of the table with just 3 rounds remaining. It was also the club’s 12th consecutive league victory this season, a streak that dates all the way back to Round 7 and is a league record for the longest streak in NPL history, eclipsing Devonport’s mark of 11 consecutive wins achieved in 2016.

Today’s result was never in doubt as they completely dominated the Lions from start to finish in what was an absolute clinic. Nick Morton scored twice in the opening 20 minutes as the Champions put on a show for their home crowd. Their passing and slick ball movement was a cut above as they dismantled the Lions in emphatic fashion. Adam Gorrie was a star down the right whilst Kobe Kemp bossed the midfield.

It didn’t take long for South to get started, Morton getting on the end of an intelligent back heel from Darcy Hall and firing home to make it 1-0 before doubling the lead five minutes later when he volleyed home from an inch perfect Adam Gorrie cross.

The Gorrie and Kemp combination down the right was absolutely unstoppable, two hands woulnd’t have been enough to count the amount of times Kemp released him and the overlapping Gorrie got on the end of a pass to send in a cross as the Lions were completely under siege.

It was only due some profligacy the margin wasn’t greater at half time with a slew of chances being missed as the shot count began to mount. Eventually South would make it 3 just before the break when Gorrie picked out Darcy Hall who finished tidily from close range.

Early in the second half it was 4-0 when a Kobe Kemp free kick, whose set piece delivery was testing all afternoon landed in the path of Dan Brown who buried it at the back post.

Lucas Lane came close to pulling one back but Kieran Brown was alert in the South Hobart net to deny him as he was minutes later to deny Belstead after some nice play from Bastock and Harms.

Darcy Hall started the game as a striker but moved back to the right win after the introduction of Hamlett and from there he sent in a brilliant cross to set up Alex Walter for a simple tap in to make it 5-0.

Only some inspirational goalkeeping from Sheku Kamara kept it at 5-0 as South kept pushing hard for another goal, yet couldn’t find a way past the Lions keeper whose save numbers reached double figured by full time.

The final whistle then rang out around Darcy Street confirming South’s league title success and crowning a tremendous season from the club. They have played some truly superb football this season and are worthy winners, as evidenced by the show they put on for their delighted home crowd in this one.

By claiming the League title, South ensured they will be the Tasmanian representative in the NPL Finals series, that will pit the winners of each State’s NPL competition against each other. South have been drawn for a home game against the Champions of Queensland in the quarter finals, on September 17 at Darcy Street.
