Mexico lead charge for Australian Junior International
MEXICO has led the overseas charge into Ballarat for the Australian Junior Badminton International.
This is a major event on the international under-19 badminton calendar, offering points for players striving to qualify for next year’s Youth Olympics.
Coach Pedro Yang is excited about an opportunity to represent one of Mexico’s minor sports at international level.
“We expect our athletes to do well and hopefully win a few matches,” Yang said.
“If they qualify for the youth Olympics then it will really help with the exposure.”
Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Zealand and Narau will make up the rest of the field, which will feature more than 150 players and support staff for men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
“It’s not a sport that a lot of people watch, but if we can get a couple of hundred through the doors then we can also raise the profile a bit,” Cator said.
