World Juniors: Tough First Day for Aussies

In the morning match Australia faced off against 9/16 seed Singapore in what was expected to be a tough match. The Singapore team took the opening two matches, with Aussies Alice Wu and Daniel Guda unable to win their respective singles matches. Gronya Somerville and Joy Lai needed to win their women’s doubles match to keep the contest alive, however they lost an agonisingly close third game 25-23 in which they held two match points. Singapore won the men’s doubles comfortably over Anthony Joe and Seng Low before the tie concluded with Somerville and Guda losing another tight match for the Aussies, this time losing the deciding game 22-20 in the mixed doubles.

It was a daunting match for the young Aussies in the afternoon, taking on top seed and badminton powerhouse China. Daniel Guda and Gronya Somerville showed they were not intimidated by the Chinese as they took the opening mixed doubles to a deciding third game, unfortunately though they could not maintain the pressure and went down 21-13.

The Australian team found it very tough going in the rest of the tie as China showed their strength and class to take the remaining four matches comfortably.

Australia will take on Spain in their final group match this afternoon (4:30pm AEDT). A win means the Aussies will play off for spots 17-24, while a loss will relegate them to the 24-32 play off.
