Expansion Update September 2018
The WBA Board is pleased to provide this update on our long awaited stadium expansion project.
Since the last update in June, when we forecast we would break ground in October, there have been a number of changes to the project, which have changed the anticipated milestones. WBA is currently undertaking a process, where the shortlisted contractors will submit tenders for the project.
At this point, our architects have almost completed the design and contract documentation for our expansion and it will be issued to the 3 shortlisted contractors in early October. Bid deadlines will be 4 weeks later and the review process of the 3 submissions will then immediately occur. We hope to have selected the contractor for our project during November, with some visible works to commence on site during December.
Latest information suggests the expansion will be complete in February 2020, in time for our winter competitions.
A condition of the contract is that our competitions cannot be interrupted. However, there will be interruptions around some parts of our stadium. Until such time as a contractor is selected, we are unable to describe the extent and timing of interruptions, but we do know they will impact the areas of access to the stadium and pedestrian traffic in and around the stadium. Carpark traffic will also be affected, however it will be minimised at all times. Construction will also cause a temporary relocation of our administration, toilets & change rooms, cafe, etc. We will advise our patrons about the likely periods, nature (and solutions) of interruption as soon as we have a better understanding of the construction program.
We are already working on the transition strategy towards our emerging capacity when we have 4 more courts in 2020. This will involve a controlled interim expansion as we secure more courts to achieve that growth. We anticipate the expanded stadium capacity will require another domestic junior club as part of the overall strategy to fill the new capacity.
While we have enough funds for all the structural and basic functional aspects of the stadium, we will require more funding to finish the project to a standard we want for current and future generations of players. In this respect, if anyone would like to contribute to our project, please go to the donations link on our website to make a tax deductible donation, or contact the office directly to make a donation directly to our bank account or via credit card. Our current fund for this purpose already has over $75,000 in it. Once the contractor is appointed, we will have a much better understanding of the extra funds required to complete the project.
We support the City of Canning’s decision to upgrade other areas of the Burrendah sports precinct during the stadium expansion and look forward to playing our part in the overall precinct development.
We will have another update to our patrons in December.
