Black: Promising signs for Tigers

Willetton Tigers MSBL head coach Steve Black praised the “electrifying” performance of captain Damien Scott in Saturday’s game versus the Stirling Senators.

The Tigers finished with their first home court win for the season when they took on the East Perth Eagles on Friday night at Willetton Basketball Stadium, with a final score of 110-80.

However, they couldn’t quite back it up on Saturday against the Stirling Senators, losing 80-89.

Black said Friday’s win showed promising signs for the team, however, the loss on Saturday proves there is still a long way to go.

Friday was a promising performance, particularly to win our first game at home, but we certainly need to be disappointed in our weekend as a whole, given our expectations,” Black said.

“With Stirling missing two starters, we felt there was an opportunity we let slip, but certainly on Friday night we felt like our offence kicked into gear a little.

Ex-Perth Wildcats player Jackson Hussey dominated for the Tigers in their victory against the Eagles, finishing with a team high 30 points and four rebounds, seven assists.

However, the real standout for the weekend was captain Damien Scott’s performance against the Stirling Senators.

Scott racked up 36 points, seven rebounds, seven turnovers and three steals in a season-best game for the SBL superstar.

Black said the it was only a matter of time before the newly appointed captain reminded fans what he is capable of.

“Damien Scott is one of the most electrifying players in this competition and it was only a matter of time until he had a breakout game,” Black said.

“Hopefully we can keep putting him in good positions and he can be as productive as he was on Saturday.”

The Tigers are taking on Lakeside Lightening this Saturday and Black said the team have got a point to prove after losing to the team earlier in round two.

“I hope the guys are more focused on having the opportunity to show that we are far better than the performance we gave in the last encounter with Lakeside,” Black said.

“We have gone over that game extensively and it will be important from my perspective to see what we have learnt.”
