Skiff Report | 11 February 2018
Club Championship 5 and after a small postponement a fresh Southerly breeze was rattling across Belmont Bay.
Insight Building sailed a great first work to lead around the top mark, with the in-form Fire Stopping close behind. The next pack of skiffs nipping at their heels included the Club Championship leaders and defending Champions, TJS. Unfortunately for the Young Guns a gear failure down the first run would force their early retirement from the race. Fire Stopping hit the lead at the first bottom mark and continued to sail very well for the remainder of the race, and they needed to because Insight Building, East Coast Marine, Redicrete, Compass Global Markets & Minder were all right behind them and were challenging for the lead. With the Howard brothers sailing so well and Rohan back in the bow Fire Stopping has become a real force, especially with small rig, in recent weeks and they were in front at the top mark with the run to the Club to go. Redicrete was right behind and these 2 skiffs had created a small buffer to the rest of the leading pack. It was this buffer that allowed Redicrete to roll the dice and have a crack at the win without fear of losing a boat behind. Redicrete slipped into the lead moments before the finish line with the very well sailed Fire Stopping right behind.
