Skiff Report | 28 January 2018
On Sunday morning the Belmont Skiffs took the Laser and Cherub Sailors for a race.
Matty Crockett steered East Coast Marine & Sail and hasn’t lost any of his touch as they sailed away to win. Also on board was laser sailor Chris Caldecoat. Insight was the early leader and came in 2nd with Jarrod Turner on the wheel and 3rd was Morgan Frew on Fire Stopping.
In the afternoon the Nor’Easter was blowing nicely and all the skiffs were on small rig. Piper Planning won the start and led around the top mark. Fire Stopping have been steadily improving throughout this season and on the first run they hit the lead and controlled the race very well to take the win. It was a well-deserved win and a nice reward for their perseverance as they’ve had several for’hands filling in for Rohan while he has dealt with some health issues, but Rohan donned the helmet to protect his noggin and showed great courage and skill in the windy conditions to help the Howard brothers to their first scratch win in the 16s. Redicrete was in 2nd spot for most of the race but the fast finishing Insight reeled them in to take 2nd spot. Matt Crockett sailed Sheethand with son Tom and Spesh on Compass and they also sailed a great race in the lead pack. Empty Jets, Andrews Meat and Blacksmiths Meats were other boats to do well in the fresh conditions.
