Skiff Report | 5 March 2017
Belmont had Club Championship 6 and the conditions were tough. The breeze was in the south/west and very shifty and gusty. It got quite windy at stages throughout the race. Most of the more experienced crews were on big rig while many of the less experienced choose the small rig. "ATB Morton" led the fleet around the first mark with a group of boats, including "TJS", "OAS", "Insight", "Redicrete" and "Wandiyali" close behind. As the race progressed "TJS", Redicrete" and "OAS" gained a gap on the rest and despite the challenging conditions had an extremely close race to the finish, it was still anyone's race as they charged downwind to the Club. "OAS" grabbed the win while "TJS" slipped past "Redicrete" when they had spinnaker problems.
In conditions like Sunday you'd expect the more experienced boats or the outstanding talents on "TJS" to be at the front on scratch as they were. You'd also expect those boats on the lower handicaps to do well on handicap. Often in these conditions a boat like "Andrews Meat" will do well also. With the experienced Action on the helm, plenty of righting moment and a fast boat they usually feature in these races and as expected they finished on the podium.
But we didn't expect the winners would be the "Schweppes". These boys are young and inexperienced, they're lightweights and have an older boat that's not quite as fast as some of their rivals. They are good young sailors though and you'd expect them to go well on handicap in the lighter conditions when the faster boats can't stretch their legs. Their performance on Sunday was simply outstanding and one of the highlight wins of the season! When they gain that bit more experience, when they gain a little more weight & muscle and when they upgrade to a bit faster boat they're capable of following in the footsteps of "TJS" and becoming Belmont's next Young Guns.
1st - "OAS" - Ben, Dobo & Dave

With one race left to go "TJS" has the Club Championship wrapped up. This tops off an amazing season for them after their Australian Championship victory.
Congratulations Henry, Grant & Izzy.
