16ft Skiff State Championship Belmont Round Report
Belmont Bay turned on ideal sailing conditions for the final round of the 16ft Skiff State Championships.
On the Saturday our friends from Lake Macquarie Yacht Club organised their racing so they’d have minimal impact on our race course. This meant the big fleet of 16s got full use of the small rig Nor’Easter. It turned out to be a day for the locals, Wandiyali were the leaders with TJS, OAS, Redicrete, Empty Jets & Southern ...Beaches Rugby in the chasing pack. Unfortunately for Wandiyali they had some problems with their vang which slowed their progress. This left 3 boats vying for the win in a close finish, Redicrete & TJS were coming in from the left and OAS were charging in from the right side. Redicrete slipped across in front of the Young Guns with OAS in 3rd spot. James & Co. took handicap honours from a duo of Illawara boats.
1st – Redicrete – Ando, Bretto & Nigel
2nd – TJS – Henry, Grant & Izzy
3rd – OAS – Ben, Dobo & Dave
1st – James & Co. - Benny, Peptide Phil
2nd – Illawarra Gear & Diff – Kevin
3rd – Dunno – Thorpey , Nitro
Sunday’s breeze had swung to the Sou’East and dropped to big rig conditions. Sutech, blasted out of the blocks to establish a good lead and they were never headed, playing the shifts perfectly and controlling the race. Insight Building & Redicrete were tussling for the remaining podium positions although Redicrete ended up being OCS and not in the race. Fire Stopping, Southern Beaches and Brydens were the next bunch with Fire Stopping grabbing 3rd. Pepsi Max opted for the small rig and grabbed a nice win on handicap.
1st – Sutech – Ruffy, Pauly & Stevo
2nd – Insight Building – Adam, Scott & Pete
3rd – Fire Stopping – Joe, Kung Foo Panda & Rob
1st – Pepsi Max – Stutcho, Ben and Burkey
2nd – Growthbuilt – Ryan
3rd – Toogara – Luke
Overall the team on Fire Stopping took out a well deserved State Championship. Their great form in the first round at Middle Harbour gave them the lead and they held onto that advantage. Sutech’s last heat win elevated them into 2nd spot with TJS taking 3rd.
Congratulations Joe, Jimmy & Rob.
Thanks to Mick and his team as well as the volunteers from Middle Harbour and Belmont for your time running the event.
