Skiff Report | State Championships | Middle Harbour | 12 & 13 November 2016

The 16 foot Skiffs travelled to Middle Harbour for their 1st round of the State Championships.

Saturdays race was sailed in a puffy and fickle Nor’East breeze that faded right out and turned around to the south’easter at the end.

The Young Guns on TJS Services were Belmont’s best performing boat on both days. On the Saturday they were in the lead bunch and came away with a 6th place after the tricky finish to the race.

Manly’s Fire Stopping were the winners.

Sunday’s race was a very windy Westerly. The conditions proved a real challenge for the whole fleet with almost every boat having at least 1 capsize. The Belmont boats though were all doing very well in the fresh, gusty conditions with East Coats Marine & Sail, Wandiyali, Redicrete, Compass Global Markets, OAS, Southern Beaches Rugby & TJS all in the lead bunch. Unfortunately there was some confusion with the course and TJS crossed the line thinking they’d taken the win with still 1 lap to go, many of the other Belmont boats followed TJS across the line and headed for home. Fire Stopping sailed the extra lap to take the 2nd heat of the states and with 2 wins are in a commanding position overall.

Man of Match from Belmont, though, would go to the veterans on Blacksmiths Family Meats. Sheldo, Craig & Gaz picked the tricky conditions well on Saturday to finish 8th and then survived the strong westerly, knew the correct course and came home 12th, and sit in equal 7th overall. Blacksmiths Family Meats also have a 6th and a 3rd and sit 2nd overall in the Handicap section.
