Weekend Sailing Report 13/14 Feb
What a beautiful summer blue sky, sun filled weekend - great to be on the water (although the wind didn’t cooperate particularly on Sunday!)
Saturday morning our Pelican fleet sailed a handicap start point score race with Wot Da Heck (Beau C & Ronan P) crossing the line first. They were followed by Graffiti (William B & Darby J) and Slingshot (Tom D & Taj W). Slingshot sailed a fast race and won on time (scratch) with Wot Da Heck in second and Rattle & Hum (Thomas S & Noah S) third.
The Pelican Recreation Squad race was led home by Intrepid (Mary-Jane R & Bailey J) with Double Trouble (Sophie P & Zali W) and Independent (Joshua G & crew) taking 2nd and 3rd. Double Trouble was the fastest on course taking the scratch win.
Our Saturday classes all sailed a Club Championship heat:
Flying 11s: SCR – 1st Silly Galah (Thomas S & Cameron C), 2nd Hydromatic (Rebecca H & Eve P), 3rd Hammertime (Tom D & Brin L). HCP – 1st Sudden Impact (Sarah H & Jacinta A), 2nd Silly Galah, 3rd Holy Smokes (Felix P & Rhys M).
29ers: SCR & HCP – 1st Seriously Guided (Tom S & Henry S), 2nd NHS (Tom C & Tom G), 3rd Nirvana (Emma J & Lucas G).
Cherubs: SCR – 1st Son of Wally (Trevor F & Nigel B), 2nd New Order (Andrew S & Dave S), 3rd Spread’ers (Adam C & Thomas M). HCP – 1st Spread’ers, 2nd Causing Haavik (Brett L & Ryan L), 3rd Ricochet (Stuart K & Samantha N).
Lasers: SCR – 1st Old Yella (Matt C), 2nd Jons Boat (Jon S), 3rd Afterglow (John K). HCP – 1st Jons Boat, 2nd Old Yella, 3rd Afterglow.
Laser Radials: SCR – 1st Aeolus (Will H), 2nd Acme Laser (Janease G), 3rd Scooter (John C). HCP – 1st Acme Laser, 2nd Aeolus, 3rd Ervand (Lukas L).
Our Skiffs had a great day of fun on Sunday with the Veterans Race on the water, the Skiffies Ladies Lunch upstairs in The Quarterdeck and the “spectating” veterans in the Belmont Room.
19 boats took to the water in a very light nor’wester. With the breeze dying, going patchy during the race and eventually swinging to the sou’east, it made for some interesting racing with many positions changes. Have to say the race was well sailed from the Belmont Room with these Veterans picking every shift and wind change!!
In the end (of a shortened course) it was EmptyJets.com.au (Dave Anstey & Peter Williams) who crossed for line honours only marginally ahead of TJS (Gary Telford) and Coastal Shipwright Services (David Sullivan). Then a small gap to Newcastle Herald (John Boyd, Dave “Dimps” Johnson & Michael Jackson) and Lion (Dave Hale). It was great to see so many veterans sailing and the afternoon “debrief” on the Gazeway Terrace, with Gazeway skipper Tubby Reid in attendance, was an enjoyable way to finish off a fun day!
