Flying 11 Nationals @ Belmont - great racing!

During January we hosted the Australian Flying 11 Championship here at the Club with almost 140 young sailors on the water for an 11 race series.

We are very proud of the efforts of all of our young Flying 11 sailors, many of whom had never sailed in a national championship before. Individually they posted some great results, many hitting some “personal best” finishing places, whist others showed their potential with a couple of great top mark roundings (next step is to hold onto that place!). Some learnt what that big black flag means and a few learnt what it was like to face a National Jury either as protestee or protestor!

At the top end the racing was great to watch. The boat handling and tactical skill – WOW! There are some very talented kids in this class! Hammertime (Tom D & Brin L) was our top placed boat in 6th overall with the boys also taking out the Australian Junior Champion crown. Congratulations Hammertime! Silly Galah (Thomas S & Cameron B) sailed a very consistent series to also finish in the Top 10 in 8th overall, their race scores – only 3 not in the top 10 (and these were only just outside!). Great consistency guys!

Oscar (Jed F & William B) just missed the top 10 by 3 points, to finish in 11th overall. These guys had some great races with their best place a 4th in race 2, with two other top 10 race results as well.

Hydromatic (Rebecca H & Eve P) also sailed a wonderful series with places of 4th & 8th in races 7 & 8. The girls placed second in the All-Girls Championship, narrowly missing the crown by 1 place & 2 points.

Holy Smokes (Felix P & Rhys M) showed enormous improvement and signs of future success by placing 17th overall. The boys only sailed their first nationals last year and this year posted three top 10 race placings.

Flight Time (Marcus L & Beau P) finished the series in 19th overall with their best placing a very creditable 5th in race 9. Ondalay (Aimee G & Chelsea W) placed 22nd overall also with a top 10 race place for them in race 6 with a 9th.

Spitfire (James R & Angus J) and Hot Chilli (Kelsey T & Georgia S) were pushing to get great starts . . . but unfortunately were “pinged” with a BFD, both in race 6. They placed 25th and 32nd overall respectively.

All sailing their first national championship, Sudden Impact (Sarah H & Jacinta A) - 55th , Frustration (Courtney S & Lilli P) - 56th and Aku Aku (Bethany S & Josh G) - 61st, all gained invaluable experience racing 11 races, in a top-level fleet of 68 boats, over 6 days. Lots of learning (and lots of fun!).

We must thank all of the wonderful parents who volunteered their time to assist with the conduct of the racing whether that was on the water on the Start and Finish boats, on the mark laying/safety boats or on shore in the race office and radio room (in sometime stifling conditions – we had a couple of 40 degree days!). We must also thank those parents who volunteered the use of their personal boats to supplement the resources of the Club.

It was a great honour for some of our Club’s past Flying 11 sailors to present trophies to the new champions of the Class at the Presentation. Harry Morton, 2014 29er World Champion & currently campaigning an Olympic class 49er, Simon Hoffman, the newly crowned 29er Australian Champion and Emma Jones & Karma Randall the out-going Australian All-Girl champions with Emma having now stepped up to skipper in the 29er class.

The standard of racing from the entire Nationals Flying 11 fleet was outstanding . . . there will no doubt be more future champions coming from these ranks.
