Brian & Lorraine Cloney named the 2016 AFL Sydney Volunteers of the Year

At the 2016 Phelan Mostyn Medal Night on 12th September Brian and Lorraine Cloney of the Southern Power AFC were awarded the 2016 BLK AFL Sydney Volunteer of the Year award.

Brian and Lorraine Cloney have been involved with the Southern Power football club since 1997 and are the lifeblood of the club. The club would not be where it is today without these two wonderful servants of our great game. During their 20 years, Brian has held just about every position within the football club, except President while Lorraine has been the ever reliable canteen manager during this time.

Both Brian and Lorraine have remained committed to the club, long after their sons finished playing and they have always been amongst the first to get to the ground each match-day morning and last to leave. They do all of this without fuss or request for thanks and fittingly the clubs prestigious Club Man and Club Woman of the Year Awards are named in their honour. It is fitting that they are jointly awarded the AFL Sydney Volunteer of the Year Award for their service.

The Cloney’s first involvement with the Southern Power (formerly the Sutherland Sharks, then Southern Sharks) was way back in 1997 when one of their sons, Stuart, started playing senior football with the club. Since their first involvement with the club, Brian and Lorraine have been one of the few constants at the senior club which continues to this day, long after the end of their son’s football career.

During the past 20 years, Brian has filled just about every committee and club role at the Power, except President. In addition to his roles on the committee, Brian has for the past decade been the ever reliable ground manager and is well known throughout the league with visiting clubs.

Lorraine has been the club's Canteen Manager for the majority of the past 20 years spending most Saturdays behind the canteen in the Bob and Nan Loveday pavilion at Gwawley oval (with plenty of assistance from daughter Elise) as well as filling other club and team roles when required.
