Sydney University Claim Upset Win in Division Three
Sydney University have claimed an upset 18 point win over UTS in Division Three at Blacktown ISP today.
The Students came in as underdogs into the match but 22 scoring shots to 14 handed them a 9.13 to 7.7 victory.
The pressure was high in the early parts of the contest as both sides looked to gain the upper hand. It was the Bats who got the first goal of the day coming through Nicholas Barrett. Sydney University responded before the Bats kicked another one for the quarter to take a 3 point lead into quarter time. The second quarter was much of the same with foot skills from both sides being affected by the immense tackling pressure. A 2 goal to 1 second quarter to Students gave them a 2 point lead into the main break.
The third quarter was all Sydney Uni kicking the first four goals of the quarter, two to Gabriel Robbie and 2 to Nick Lloyd to open up a 29 point margin. A late Bats goal to Mark Ayers gave them a sniff as we entered the final quarter. The Bats needed the first goal of the last but it was Robbie kicking his third for the Students to give them momentum. Despite kicking the next two goals, the Bats were unable to close the margin enough as the siren sounded to hand the Students the premiership.
Nick Lloyd was outstanding for the Students all day and was awarded best on ground. Charles Allworth and Alexander Clark were strong through the middle of the ground all day. For the Bats, Hugh Perks, Bradley Wooten and Brett Day were impressive in a defeated side.
