AFL Sydney Women claim upset win

Saturday saw the first ever AFL Sydney Women’s Representative side compete against AFL Canberra Women’s team to see which was the best side in NSW/ACT.

Both sides were desperate to get the win and to take a 1-0 lead in the best of 2 game series.

AFL Sydney came out on fire, combining well and kicking the first goal of the match through Steph Walker (pictured left). AFL Sydney continued to apply the pressure to the Canberra side, finally breaking the defence and setting up two quick goals to Hannah McIntosh to take a 18 point lead into the first break.

The second quarter was all about defence with neither side able to get the ball through the big sticks but Sydney were still able to extend their lead to 19 points heading into the main change.

The Canberra Women were wanting to start the third quarter off well and did so with Jessica Sibley kicking a goal with 25 seconds. However, Sydney responded well with the next four goals including McIntosh’s third to open up a match winning lead of 38 points at the last change.

AFL Sydney would be held goalless in the last but that wouldn't matter with the harbour city claiming a 7.6 (48) to 2.4 (16) win over AFL Canberra.

Steph Walker was lively up forward and was awarded the best on ground from the umpires while Maddy Collier was hard into every contest and awarded best on ground from the opposition. Kathryn Hull and Codie Briggs also dominated their opponents in the win.

For the Canberra side, Louise Winter tried her best to will her side in the contest and was well supported by Grace Gill and Heather Anderson.

The second match in the series will be played on the 5th July at Blacktown ISP.
