New Caledonia beats American Samoa 3-0
The hosts rose gained confidence after holding the visitors to a 1-0 lead at half-time. Boanemoa Raphael got New Caledonia on the scoreboard with a hard fought goal after American Samoa came out firing from the opening whistle. But thereafter, the American Samoans were equal to the task on defence and contested for every possession.
Urged on by a vocal crowd, Ruben Luvu's charges continued to frustrate New Caledonia in the second half. American Samoa pushed forward to try and gain the equaliser but fatigue during the dying stages of the match allowed New Caledonia to score two opportunist goals to push the margin out to 3-0.
Substitute Hnageje Albert scored the final goal as soon as he came on. American Samoa did not make any substitutions the entire match.
New Caledonia now takes a commanding lead in Group A with six points from two wins.
New Caledonia plays Cook Islands in their next match, while Samoa takes on Fiji who will be looking to erase the shock loss they suffered in the first round against New Caledonia. American Samoa draws a bye for the third round.
