Free-scoring United fire four past Glory

Report by Tommy Doleman

Joondalup United move within three points of the top four with a come from behind 4-1 victory over Perth Glory in the PS4 NPLWA at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday.

The visitors struck first through Bayley Brown-Montgomery after a good opening, but Alex Wild’s equaliser settled the hosts’ nerves.

Anthony Taylor and Josh Booysen added two quick goals in four minutes to put United in control before Luke Serra netted off the bench late on.

It was the second time in four weeks that Joondalup United have put four goals past the Glory and coach Nick Jennings is pleased with his teams attacking prowess this season.

“We set up very offensively and people call us the entertainers because we’re always a threat going forward,” he said.

“It’s frustrating because we’ve been giving away silly goals through a lack of concentration, but we have a massive attacking emphasis and are always a threat going forward.

“We were slow out of the traps but slowly got into the game, got three quick goals and then in the second half we were more like ourselves and very professional.”

Jennings also admits that the club has reassessed their objectives in 2017 and is still hopeful of being involved in the knock-out phase of the competition.

“Initially we just wanted to consolidate our position in the new league, but now we’re looking upwards,” he said.

“I’m challenging the guys to finish as high up as possible and if that gets us in the top four then I’m sure teams won’t want to play us.

“A lot of our guys haven’t played at this level and are still settling in. We’ve done a reasonable job but there’s more to come.”

Perth Glory started strongly and took the lead on 10 minutes when Brown-Montgomery shrugged off his marker and fired into the bottom corner.

They pressed for a second as Brown-Montgomery forced James Bosdet into a save from range, before Cam Murray’s cross was just beyond Michael Domfeh’s outstretched leg.

Joondalup United leveled against the run of play as Wild tapped into an empty net after good work from Richard Howles down the left.

Brown-Montgomery’s chip hit the underside of the bar, bouncing away to safety and luck was against them again on 28 minutes as the hosts took the lead.

Taylor’s cross from the right hand side was floated into the area and ended up nestling in the bottom corner beyond Kyle McDonald.

Four minutes later they added as a third when Guy McDonald dug out a cross and the ball broke nicely for Booysen to fire home.

The second half wasn’t as open as the first, but the visitors nearly pulled one back when Domfeh snuck in behind defence, only for Bosdet to block his goal bound toe-poke.

Daniel Stynes curled an effort onto the bar as the Glory cursed their luck again. Salt was rubbed into the wounds 12 minutes from time when Joondalup United added a fourth.

Substitute Serra was only on the park for a few minutes when he rose to head home Rowdy Yates’ corner and wrap up the three points.
