Perth secure dominant win over Cockburn

Report by Jayden Lihou

Perth SC have gained vital points after round 12 of the PS4 NPLWA, with a 3-1 win over Cockburn City at Dalmatinac park on Saturday.

Only one point separated the two teams going into the match, with the away side asserting their intentions to move closer to the top of the league ladder.

Perth coach Ramon Falzon said his side put in a complete performance but was disappointed they couldn’t get the clean sheet.

“We had a compact shape and when we needed to defend I thought we were very solid,” he said.

“We looked dangerous every time we pushed forward, so on the whole I thought we played very well.

“This is a good win because it’s very important that we try and close the gap on the teams in front of us.”

Perth found the breakthrough in the 18th minute when Frank Furfaro found Gustavo Catarcione, who had enough time to find the back of the net.

Catarcione turned provider on the cusp of half-time, as he squared the ball to Andreas Theodosiades who converted comfortably.

The third goal for Perth came in the 57th minute when Paul Zimarino laid the ball off for Furfaro who drilled it into the bottom corner.

Cockburn had an opportunity to claw one back in the 76th minute when a long-range shot from substitute Kenel Mouithys spurred a diving save from Francis Soale.

Perth quickly turned defence into attack from the resulting corner as Furfaro raced from the half-way line and made his way into the box.

Furfaro the crossed it to an open Catarcione who was waiting at the penalty spot but the striker’s volley was denied thanks to a finger-tip save from keeper Luke Radonich.

The Cockerels did manage to score a consolation goal in the 84th minute when former Perth player Aden Da Luz lashed the ball into the back of the net after a scramble in the box.

Cockburn coach Scott Miller said his side’s defending as a team was to blame for the defeat.

“To be fair, we knocked the ball around very well today but we just lacked the final killer ball,” he said.

“It’s back to the drawing board for us so hopefully we can learn from this game and turn things around against Glory next week.”
