Floreat move into top four

Report by Kane Sutton

Floreat Athena stamped their authority on the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues WA with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Subiaco at Rosalie Park on Saturday.

The win propelled Athena into the top four, while Subiaco remains stuck at the bottom of the ladder.

It's been a huge few weeks for Floreat who went undefeated throughout June and have recently been drawn to host Hyundai A-league heavyweights Melbourne City in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32.

Coach Glen Grostate had naught but praise to give his team and encouraged them to use the momentum to their advantage.

“I thought today our composure, our structure and ball movement was very good,” he said. “I'm very happy with the way we did.

“You've got to play off that momentum. That draw is unbelievable getting to play against a big team like that and the boys are buzzing.”

Grostate did however emphasise the importance of focussing on what lies directly ahead with the team set to face Perth SC next weekend.

“We need the three points; that's the most important thing to us,” he said. “We feel like we're good enough to be in the top four and chasing that finals spot.”

Floreat opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Christopher Saldaris’ shot deflected of Subiaco’s Ger Fitzgerald and into the back of the net.

The away side doubled their advantaged when captain Ludovic Boi found space and fired home from inside the box.

The game looked set in stone just minutes later as Philip Arnold, who had looked dangerous all game, volleyed one in from close range.

The second half was more evenly matched and Subiaco picked up the intensity as they tried desperately to break away from Floreat's defence.

Their chances, however, were few and far between. Despite several close attempts on goal in the dying minutes it was Floreat who sealed the deal through substitute Nathan Scully.

Subiaco coach Michael Brazil lamented the continuity of his team's poor performance.

“Nothing's changed the last two weeks,” he said. “Teams aren't working hard to beat us, we're gifting them goals every week. Until we can eliminate these individual errors, I mean, it's killing us.

“[The boys] are down, they're really down. And they know it's a massive ask, and we're still in it but you can talk until the cows come home – until we fix these errors it's going to be the same conversation every week.”
