Clinical Subiaco take the Glory

Report by Callum George

Two goals in the space of four minutes was enough for Subiaco to claim an important three points against fellow league strugglers Perth Glory.

It was the Glory who started the better of the two sides as captain Daniel Stynes intercepted a wild pass from the Subiaco defence and was left one on one with Subiaco custodian Ryan Montgomery coming off his line to deflect the ball out for a corner.

Glory were in control for most of the first half, however it was Subiaco who had the best chance. Sam Riak failed to clear an incoming cross giving Jordan Candlish a golden opportunity from close range but he fired into the side netting.

Despite their dominance, Glory struggled to produce any clear cut chances in the opening 45 minutes and the sides went into the break 0-0.

Glory once again came out of the blocks firing in the second half as Michael McDougall and Joe Knowles both had attempts saved by Montgomery, who was in fine form on the day.

Subiaco managed to work their way into the game in the second half and got their reward on the hour mark.

Owen Coates delivered a mouth-watering ball from the right wing to the back post for Rory Feely who headed it home from close range.

The hosts doubled their lead just four minutes later as Candlish scored one of the goals of the season.

Picking the ball up 25m from goal, he rifled his shot past a fully stretched Jordan Thurtell to ensure Subiaco collected all three points.

Subiaco coach Ian McMurray wasn’t happy with his side in the first half but was pleased with the turnaround.

“We took our chances when they came up and I think that was the difference today,” he said.

Glory stand-in coach David Butterfield felt that his side played well on the day but hurt themselves by not taking their chances.

“We probably could have been a bit better in front of goal or in the final third but, again, we didn’t take those chances we were given."
