Season Preview: Mandurah City

Football West News

Mandurah City coach Doug Hesketh believes his newly promoted team’s push into the QBE Night Series Grand Final is a sign of things to come.

Mandurah are gearing up to take on last season’s champions Perth SC at Dorrien Gardens in a season opener that will test his side to the limit but Hesketh knows his players will be challenged in every match.

This year will be no different to last,” he said. “We have short and long term goals to achieve and we certainly don't fear any opponent.

I know we are a good squad but this is a major step for us. We aim to give a good account of our club in the top league and show we have done major development over the last two and a half years.”

Hesketh said his aim is for Mandurah City to retain NPL status this season.

“If we can maintain this position it will be brilliant for the southern region and Mandurah FC,” he said. “We intend to win every game we play and if that works well there may be some big surprises.”

Hesketh has tipped Bayswater City as favourites for the title in a tight race.

“I expect some surprises challenging the top spots as all teams are capable in my opinion,” he said. “Bayswater are proven campaigners at that level with a strong leader who demands success.”

Mandurah captain Andy Brown will lead by example.

“He is an excellent footballer and demands success,” Hesketh said. “I think our experienced players such as Andy Brown, Ollie McGee and Jeff Bright will come through for the team this season but our keys to success will be planning and team spirit.”
