Canham's double helps Gulls swoop

Report by Ilija Stajić

Sorrento continued their winning form in the National Premier Leagues WA campaign with another 2-1 victory - this time over Inglewood United at Intiga Stadium yesterday.

Sean Canham was again the man of the moment as he struck his second double in two games to emphasise his importance to the Gulls.

His first goal came in the 34th minute when he beat the Inglewood defence and slotted past goalkeeper Luke Martino. Then on the hour, he turned a stray cross into a great opportunity to score with a header.

Despite Inglewood’s predicament, the momentum swung their way with winger David Sesay threatening to supply the ammunition for an Inglewood goal.

In fact, it was Ryan Clarke who gave Inglewood a lifeline with a stunning 69th-minute strike that gave Sorrento keeper Curtis Aspden no chance.

Inglewood continued to press after the goal with Clarke, Sesay and substitute Ryan Francis hunting an equaliser without reward.

Goalscorer Clarke was disappointed Inglewood had been unable to complete the comeback.

“It was disheartening to not get a point today,” he said.

Despite having to make some important saves, Sorrento keeper Aspden had no qualms with the manner of the Gulls’ win.

“We were pretty comfortable,” he said. “They had a lot of ball (possession) but we kept a lot of pressure and at the end of the day we got the win.”

Despite the 100 per cent record, Sorrento co-coach Jamie Harnwell felt his side had room for improvement.

“We haven’t played particularly well in either game” Harnwell said of consecutive 2-1 victories over Balcatta and Inglewood. “The pleasing aspect is that we are scoring goals and looking well defensively. We have a lot to improve but I can’t fault the attitude and effort.”

Inglewood coach Graham Normanton was pleased with his team’s response to falling behind.

“We created numbers of chances and I am proud of my boys,” he said. “If we play like that, we’ll win games of football – no doubt about it. However, we didn’t get the result and we didn’t convert the goals.”
