MATCH WRAP: Booysen treble while top three march on

Report by Matthew Corvi

Joshua Booysen showed little concern for Joondalup United’s plight as he notched a hat-trick against his former club in Subiaco’s 4-0 win on Saturday.

Booysen set Subiaco on their way to a first victory of the National Premier Leagues WA season with a header past home keeper James Bodset on 16 minutes.

Bodset performed heroics to keep the score down to 1-0 at half-time, but he was helpless to stop Subiaco running away with the game after the interval.

Rory Feely doubled the lead and after United had Luke Serra sent off, Booysen took advantage to add two more goals.

“I’m absolutely delighted with the performance. Can’t fault it. We’re full of confidence going into next week,” Subiaco coach Ian McMurray said.

The win lifted Subiaco into the top half of the table but Joondalup have now lost their first four matches, scoring just once while letting in 18.

They are away at Floreat Athena next week and coach Nick Jennings said: “The only way from here is up. I’m a positive person and we will remain upbeat and aim to get our first points next week.”

The top three in the league all recorded wins, with Bayswater City maintaining their perfect start by seeing off Inglewood United 2-1.

Chris Coyne’s team fell behind inside two minutes following a goal from Ash Rosindale, but not long after the Inglewood man was sent off for a foul on Todd Howarth.

Substitute Luka Ninkovic levelled for Bayswater early in the second half, then Jason Mirco completed the comeback.

Coyne praised his side’s winning culture but said there was more to come from his players.

“At times we are doing it, but we aren’t quite doing it for 90 minutes yet and that’s what I want to see,” he said.

Second-placed Perth Glory also remain unbeaten and firmly on Bayswater’s tail after they put five past Forrestdale United – a performance which earned plaudits from home coach Rod Banjac.

Glory’s youngsters are just two points off the top and Banjac said: “This team that Glory’s got at the moment will open up a lot of eyes.”

Perth SC are another side in good form, as they showed on Sunday with a third win on the trot when beating Floreat 3-1.

Hamza Hina put Athena in front but Perth, who stay in third spot, were the better side and deserved their success thanks to goals from Matthew Milenkovic, Rocco Pizzata and Paul Zimarino.

Cockburn City remain fourth but lost ground after being held 2-2 at ECU Joondalup, while Sorrento joined the Cockerels on seven points with an unconvincing 1-0 win at Balcatta.

In the weekend’s other game Stirling came from 2-0 down at the break to beat Armadale 3-2, Steve Sokal scoring twice for the Lions.
