Season Preview: ECU Joondalup

Football West News

ECU Joondalup Head Coach Dale McCulloch has set his new-look squad some challenges ahead of the 2018 season and he is hoping they can find the form that took them close to the title in 2016.

“We’ve added some experience to the squad with keeper Johnny Perkins, defenders Adam Tong and Shane Cassidy and midfielder Josh Whitmore joining us," he said.

"They have added some steel to our side, something that was missing last season due to injuries,” he said.

“But that being said our youngsters are showing me they want to play in the starting eleven, so that bodes well for the season.”

One of those youngsters is Lukas De Lima, and McCulloch said he’s been impressive in pre-season.

“Lukas is a good lad, skilful on the ball with great awareness, and has an eye for goal,” he said.

“We are really pleased to have him back at the club after a couple of seasons at Stirling.”

McCulloch also said the title this season will be a hotly fought contest. “Bayswater City will be there or thereabouts again, although I think it will be another close one,” he said.

“I think there will be five or six teams having a chance of taking out the title, as all teams are capable of beating each other, so it’s who wants it more on the day.”

McCulloch will be looking for an improvement from his side and hopes to find more consistency after they finished sixth last season.

“We were all disappointed in the way last season panned out, but we’ve moved on,” he said.

“The best thing about last season was we were able to give some game time to a number of our talented youngsters, and they never let me or the club down.

“We go into the season hoping we can get off to a good start and have a consistent season and stay injury free and we’ll see where that takes us.”

ECU Joondalup will host Sorrento at the ECU Football Stadium in the opening NPLWA fixture on Saturday, February 24 at 3.00pm.
