Bayswater back Perth in Athena clash

Report by Alasdair Beer

Bayswater City will find themselves in the unfamiliar position of cheering on Perth SC when the latter host Floreat Athena at Dorrien Gardens on Saturday.

Currently eight points clear at the top of the PS4 National Premier Leagues WA table with four games remaining, Bayswater will surge to an unassailable 11-point lead over Floreat should they beat bottom-placed Perth Glory Youth and Athena lose to Perth.

However, Bayswater’s foremost concern will be overcoming a Glory side that was spirited despite missing 10 players in its 3-1 loss to Perth last week.

Glory's leading scorer Stefan Valentini could return to the side travelling to Frank Drago Reserve on Saturday.

Valentini was one of three youth players called up to the A-League side’s senior team for Tuesday’s FFA Cup Round of 32 clash with Newcastle, and won the penalty that allowed the Glory to equalise 1-1, before eventually winning in a shootout.

“Stef was a livewire and did really, really well,” said Glory Youth coach John Gibson of Valentini’s performance.

Gibson said all three returning players would be assessed at training, but was hopeful they would be ready for what he described as a great test against the undefeated Bayswater.

“They’re the best club in WA at the moment, so it’s a nice little challenge to have,” he said.

“We’ve been seriously competitive for the year, so that’s been really important for the boys, seeing that they’re not very far away from getting results.

“The way we’ve been playing is really, really pleasing.”
