Bayswater held by Inglewood

Report by Colin Outhwaite

Inglewood United coach Graham Normanton said his side “out-played” league leaders Bayswater City when they drew  0-0 in an exciting encounter at Intiga stadium in the NPL-WA.

Normanton was delighted with his side’s performance on the sludgy terrain and could not pick any stand-out players.

“It doesn't matter what conditions are thrown at you you've got to play in them and we knocked the ball around beautifully in the first half,” he said.

“It’s good to get back to some form at last. We’ve had a month where we’ve been indifferent but we should be playing like that every week.”

It was not all positive for Normanton as former Adelaide United striker Teeboy Kamara was stretchered off with a suspected hamstring tear in the 86th minute.

“It's disappointing - he's exciting and the type of player people come to watch, but it looks like we might have to do without him for a while,” Normanton said.

Inglewood were once again guilty of not capitalising on their chances, David Sesay kicking things off when he hit the underside of the crossbar from Kamara’s cross in the 11th minute.

Four minutes later, David Perich’s shot inside the box was kept out by keeper Devon Spence as Kamara and Sesay wreaked havoc on the wings.

Spence then pulled off a diving, one-handed save to stop Greg Sharland getting the better of him in a one on one from an Andrija Jukic through ball in the 34th minute.

Bayswater’s best effort in the first half came from a corner - Gustavo Giron Marulanda’s glancing header blocked on the line by full back Scott Witschge.

The league leaders saw more of the ball in the second half but were also guilty of poor finishing as their quality deteriorating as did the pitch.

Substitute Sahr Musa was gifted a free shot on goal when centre-back Shane Pickering struck air with an attempted clearance but keeper Luke Martino somehow tipped his shot away.

Inglewood striker Ryan Francis kept Spence busy and was almost rewarded when he stretched onto a loose pass-back to knock it narrowly wide.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne said it was a game of two different halves.

“The first half Inglewood could've been a couple up, they had most of the ball and played the conditions better than us, but we adapted and changed things around to suit the conditions,” he said.

“I think we're a bit disappointed with the draw because you want to win everything but looking back it was probably a fair result.”

Bayswater were without leading goal scorer David Heagney  and key players Todd Howarth and Adrian Caceras due to minor niggles. But Coyne needed them rested for next week’s top of the table clash against Perth SC.

“(It’s) another massive game next week,” he said. “But from now on, they're all going to be massive.”
