Lions need bite to beat United

Stirling Lions coach Gary Williams is banking on his side producing a positive performance against Inglewood United at Macedonia Park on Saturday to re-ignite their National Premier Leagues WA campaign.

The Lions, who topped the State League standings last season, have been without some key players during the early stages of 2014 and have slipped to eighth on the table.

But Williams, who was assistant to Doug Hesketh at the Lions last season, believes improved results are on the horizon.

“I’m confident we can turn the corner,” Williams said. “Our overall play hasn’t been bad but in the front third we can be more clinical and probably half of the goals we’ve conceded have been down to individual errors.

“We’re hoping we can turn our dominance (in recent games) into a win. If we get a win, I think the confidence will soar and our belief will be back.”

Inglewood lost their first four games of the season but have hit form in recent weeks with two wins and a draw.

Normanton has been particularly pleased to see 12 goals flying in during that three-match league spree.

“We’re starting to hit our straps a bit,” he said. “But they’re all big games for us because we started off so badly. You can’t win the league in the first four games of the season but you can lose it.

“I thought we were good enough to win it but that’s gone so we’ve just got to get on a run and see how far we can go.”

Inglewood will be without Million Butshiire, who has a hamstring injury, and Jon Stripe, who broke an arm in training last week.

Cockburn City could be without Conor Kavanagh for the visit to Dalmatinac Park of league leading Bayswater City after the midfielder damaged an ankle in the mid-week win over Subiaco.

Cockerels coach Marc Anthony has his fingers crossed his players will be able to dig deep in the third match of a hectic 12-day period in which they have four games.

“It’s a massive game against Bayswater and they are fresh whereas our players came off last night a bit battered and bruised after a hard game,” Anthony said.

Cockburn will welcome back Euen Grant from suspension.

Bayswater have won all seven of their league games to the delight of coach Chris Coyne.

“I think after last year the boys got used to everyone playing to beat us,” he said. “The boys got used to playing under pressure.”

At Intiga Stadium, former Perth Glory teammates Scott Miller and Jamie Harnwell will go head-to-head as coaches.

Miller’s Glory have been in top form with Jamie Maclaren scoring two successive hat-tricks in recent weeks.

Sorrento will be without the suspended Sean Canham and injured Scott Bulloch.

Perth coach Taki Nicolaidis expects to be able to call on experienced duo Craig Simpson and Andreas Theodosiades, as well as impressive youngster Alex Castiello, after their recent injuries, for the trip to ECU Joondalup.

Subiaco will have to buck the odds in search of their first win of the season when they take on fourth-placed Balcatta at Grindleford Reserve.

At E&D Litis Stadium on Sunday, Armadale will be aiming to kick-start their season against a Floreat Athena side looking to bounce back after a heavy defeat to Glory last weekend.
