Gulls safe after second-half rally

Report by Matt Kelland

Sorrento confirmed their safety in the NPL WA with a 3-1 win over Joondalup United at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday.

The Gulls had to come from behind after Elliott Tattersall’s free-kick from the right took a deflection from Sorrento defender Tim Hill and found its way into the net.

Sorrento put constant pressure on the Joondalup goal, forcing James Bodset to make several saves to give United the lead going into the break.

The equaliser came in the 59th minute when Jordan Roberts cross from the left found Godwin Darkwa at the back post, and just 60 seconds later Sorrento took the lead through Jack Salter.

Roberts doubled his goal tally for the game and confirmed a vital three points for the Gulls in the 84th minute when his outside the box effort found its way into the bottom left corner.

Gulls head coach Jamie Harnwell described the performance as professional and was pleased to come away with the three points.

He said: "We should’ve won a lot more comfortably but going in 1-0 down, it’s good to score three in the second half.

"We showed a lot of character, we dominated every aspect except for the scoreboard to start with.

"I was pleased with how they went on a difficult day in difficult conditions."

WIth two of the teams below Sorrento - Forrestfield and Stirling - meeting in the final round of matches later this month, Saturday's win means the Gulls are mathematically safe from relegation.

Joondalup United 1 (Hill og 22min)
Sorrento 3 (Darkwa 59, Salter 60, Roberts 84)

Saturday, August 4
Percy Doyle Reserve
Kick-off: 3pm
