Subiaco edge closer to safety

Report by Bobby Stamatoski

Subiaco claimed a much needed 2-0 win over Balcatta at Rosalie Park on Saturday to climb further away from the relegation zone.

A goal in each half was enough for the hosts in a gruelling fixture, as Alex Castiello opened the scoring, before player-manager Ian McMurray tapped in the sealer with 12 minutes remaining.

McMurray was relieved to come away with the three points after a scrappy game and to keep a clean sheet in tough conditions.

“We’ll look to keep winning and keep climbing up the table until the end of the season,” he said.

Balcatta coach Salv Todaro said he was pleased with his side’s second half performance, but luck had eluded them with their finishing.

“I’m really disappointed,” he said.

“I thought my boys were in the game, created a number of half chances and didn’t put them away, while the other team had a couple of chances and capitalised on them.”

Subiaco had the better moments in a first half of few chances, but were thwarted by Balcatta goalkeeper Domenico Savoldelli.

They eventually took the lead on 27 minutes when David Perich provided a cross for Castiello, who was too strong in the air and headed firmly into the back of the net.

Balcatta responded briefly but could only fire efforts from long-range, which never troubled Ryan Montgomery.

It was the hosts who should have doubled their lead before the break, though, as Savoldelli saved onto the post after a solo run and strike from Nathan Diaz.

Long-range shots continued to be a feature of the second half and Subiaco wrapped up the points with the assistance of one in the 68th minute.

Jordan Candlish had time and space to rifle a shot on goal, which Savoldelli could only parry, and McMurray was on hand to make no mistake from close range.
