Second half surge sees Gulls past Subiaco

Report by Blayne Treadgold

Second half goals to Scott Bulloch and Sean Canham help Sorrento slip past a hard working Subiaco side at Rosalie Park on Saturday afternoon.

The win pushes Sorrento to second position on the PS4 NPLWA table and close the gap on top placed Floreat Athena who now lead the league by a solitary point.

Sorrento manager Jamie Harnwell was pleased with his side’s performance, in particular the way they responded after half-time.

“I thought it was a professional performance today, we’ve dropped a lot of points lately.  It was nice to come here, keep a clean sheet and walk away with three points”.

“We thought they (Subiaco) would expend a lot of energy in the first half, trying to counter us and they’d tire… (in the second half) we started to create more chances and space, and a couple of really good goals,” he said.

Both teams had their chances to score in the first half, although a large majority of the battle was fought in the midfield with both sides finding it tough to break the deadlock.

Sorrento looked like they had scored in the 33rd minute as a loose ball was bundled over the goal line, however the referee ruled a foul on Subiaco keeper Ryan Montgomery in the process.

Subiaco weren’t without chances of their own as Rory Feely hit the upright just before half-time.

Sorrento came out the dominant side after the break with a second half surge which as Scott Bulloch headed home a Sean Canham cross in the 58th minute.

Just five minutes later Canham turned from provider to goal scorer getting on the score sheet himself.

Despite a late push by Subiaco, Sorrento went on to see out the game comfortably.

Subiaco player-manager, Ian McMurray pointed to momentary lapses in concentration as the primary cause of his team’s disappointing performance.

“I’m disappointed, I thought we played well in parts… again there are moments we’re switching off and you’ll get punished by teams”.

“We’ve got to keep going, we’re getting better but maybe five percent of the time we’re not there and we’re getting punished for it,” he said.
