Canberra FC move five points clear at Deakin

Canberra FC 3 (Michael Mensah 24’, Daniel Subasic 65’, Thomas James 90+3’) def. Tuggeranong United 0

Canberra United put in a clinical shift at Deakin on Sunday to dispatch Tuggeranong United 3-0, but United were able to lock in their finals spot thanks to results elsewhere.

A win from Tigers FC over Belconnen United ensured that despite the loss Tuggeranong cemented a spot in the final four for the first time in 15 years, and the news came through to scenes of relief.

Goals from Michael Mensah, Daniel Subasic and Thomas James rounded off a comfortable afternoon for Canberra FC, but the encounter took a while to liven up.

Both sides failed to create any real goal scoring chances in the opening 20 minutes of play until the 24th minute arrived.

Mensah was making a nuisance of himself as an aerial threat, and he beat his defender to Aiden Brunskill’s first-time cross from the right and his header flew past Jakeb Wiseman and in to give his side the lead.

The visitors switched on and did well to find a number of openings, and approaching the half Canberra FC shot stopper Sam Brown did well to deny Aisosa Ihegie in a one-on-one and the hosts headed into the sheds with a one goal advantage and their opponents chasing the game.

It was Paul Macor’s men who came out of the break stronger again though and Kofi Danning came oh so close to doubling the advantage seven minutes in.

They did get their second goal 20 minutes in through a sensational effort from Daniel Subasic. The ball came back out to the defender from the wing and noticing Wiseman off his line, he thumped the ball goalwards and it looped over the retreating goalkeeper and in for a spectacular second goal.

Marco Gayer fluffed his lines as Brown rushed out to challenge his attack 14 minutes from time in United’s best chance of the half, and Canberra FC sealed the deal in stoppage time as Thomas James rounded Wiseman and slotted the ball home for his side’s third.

The result sees Canberra FC extend their lead to five points over Canberra Olympic who they play next weekend, and that match could be a decider for the Premiership if Olympic can defeat Tigers during the week.
