NPLW Round 20 Wrap

Canberra United Academy 6 (Aoife Colvill 9’, 14’, 33’, 46’, Sasha Grove 25’, Laura Hughes 45’) def. Tuggeranong United 1 (Stepahnie Coates 71’)

The Canberra United Academy moved into second on the league table with an emphatic 6-1 win over Tuggeranong United that featured another four-goal haul from Aoife Colvill.

The Academy got off to a strong start when Colvill scored just nine minutes in and it was just five minutes later when she netted her second to double the lead.

Ryan Grogan’s side were firmly in control and Sasha Grove’s strike after 25 minutes proved that before goals to Colvill again and Laura Hughes on the stroke of half-time emphasised the dominance as they went into half-time leading by five goals.

Tuggeranong were struggling to make their mark on the game and they went down by six just a minute into the second half with Colvill’s fourth, but they began to work their way back into it as the Academy’s intensity dropped.

United pulled one back with 19 minutes left as Stephanie Coates made the most of a good chance and the game fizzled out from there with the score line at 6-0.

The Academy now face Canberra Olympic in Round 21, while Tuggeranong take on Canberra FC at Deakin Stadium.

Belconnen United 2 (Jasmine Maguire 11’, Michaela Day 36’) def. Canberra FC 0

Belconnen United moved further clear at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Canberra FC in their third Grand Final rematch at McKellar Park.

Gungahlin United 1 (Erika Pennyfield 43’) def. Woden-Weston 0

Gungahlin United kept pace with Canberra Olympic on Sunday afternoon as they grabbed a 1-0 win over Woden-Weston to finish off round 20.

United took the game to Woden-Weston from the outset, but the Wanderers applied plenty of physical pressure and were unrelenting in their approach to defending.

The hosts looked to play out wide and threaten with the aerial ball but too often were unable to work the final ball or get on the end of crosses properly.

Just two minutes before the break though Erika Pennyfield found the breakthrough as she collected the rebound from a good save and struck a tidy effort over the goal keeper and in to put her side ahead and it remained that way until half-time.

They continued to put the pressure on during the second half as Woden-Weston looked to counter and the hosts struck the woodwork a couple of times but to no avail as the margin remained just a goal up until full-time.

The win means that Gungahlin United remain three points behind Canberra Olympic for fourth spot and needing a big swing of goal difference even if they can make up the gap in points.
