Belconnen United 3 (Michaela Day 33’, Gemma Murphy 43’, Jasmine Maguire 65’) def. Woden-Weston Football Club 2 (Cassia McGlashan 33’, Alex Mackenzie 52’)

Belconnen United continued their winning ways on Saturday, as they edged out Woden-Weston in a tight encounter at McKellar Park. The game started off slowly as the visitors looked to have the game played on their terms, and it took until after the half hour mark for United to get themselves on the board. A good move up the left saw Jasmine Maguire play Michaela Day into the area and she finished cleanly to give her side the lead.

Woden-Weston struck back almost immediately though through Cassia McGlashan as she made the most of a set piece opportunity to beat Nat Lacey in goals and restore parity. Gemma Murphy put the Blue Devils ahead on the stroke of half time though with a good volley at the back post and the hosts went into the break in the lead once more.

But it took only seven minutes for that lead to disappear in the second half, as Alex Mackenzie made the most of a defensive lapse to score from the top of the box and even the score.

Both sides continued to battle it out as time wound down, but Maguire had the final say for Belconnen as she finished off a fantastic team move with a turn and good finish from outside the area to score the winner with 25 minutes left.

United now prepare for a massive away clash with Canberra Olympic, while Woden-Weston will take on Canberra FC in a rematch of the 2017 Elimination Final.

 

Monaro Panthers 0 def. by Canberra FC 5 (Lily Bardsley 2’, 74’, Diarna Genovesi 15’, Rhianna Goldstein 50’, Grace Gill 51’)

Lily Bardsley netted a brace as Canberra FC completed a five-goal rout of Monaro Panthers in Round 3 of the NPL Women’s.

Bardsley opened the scoring just two minutes in as the visitors took control from the outset, and when Diarna Genovesi extended the advantage with 15 minutes played it was clear that Canberra FC were a step ahead of their opponents.

But the Panthers looked to fight their way back into the match and held strong until the break, going in down only two goals after what looked to be a rough start.

Unfortunately for the hosts though the second half began in much the same vein as Rhianna Goldstein and Grace Gill struck within the opening six minutes to double the advantage to four goals and break the game wide open.

The second half continued with Mark Risteski’s side in cruise control and when Bardsley nabbed her second to seal the game with 15 minutes left it was the final nail in the game.

Canberra FC move onto a crunch matchup with Woden-Weston in Round Four while Panthers will face the Academy at Hawker.

 

Gungahlin United 2 (Erika Pennyfield 55’, 76’) def. by Canberra United Academy 4 (Laura Hughes 17’, 38’, Karly Roestbakken 33’, Aoife Colvill 47’)

Canberra United Academy picked up their second win in a row and condemned Gungahlin United to a second consecutive defeat in a 4-2 win at Kaleen on Sunday afternoon.

The Academy started strong and took the lead after 17 minutes when Laura Hughes finished well at the back post from Isabel Mulhall’s cross and the Academy grabbed the ascendancy from their for the first half. Karly Roestbakken curled a great effort into the corner from the edge of the area before Hughes scored again with a delightful chip just a few minutes later and the visitors strolled into the break up by three goals.

United had looked better towards the break but that was undone when Aoife Colvill strolled through on goal just two minutes into the second half and extended the lead to four.

But Diego Iglesias’ side weren’t giving up, and fought back with strong pressure. That pressure paid off when Erika Pennyfield forced an error from Sally James in the Academy goal and put the ball in the net to cut the deficit.

Pennyfield reduced it further with fourteen minutes to play as she met a great cross at the far post and netted her second, but it was too little, too late as the Academy maintained their two-goal lead to see out the game.

The result leaves United in sixth spot ahead of a meeting with seventh-placed Tuggeranong United next week, while the Academy will welcome Monaro to Hawker.
