United's Iglesias not focused on finals just yet

By Mat Stramandinoli

The end goal for most teams in any competition is to make finals; to give yourself the opportunity to win it all.

Despite being within touching distance of that goal Gungahlin United’s Diego Iglesias says that the focus is very much on the games that must be played now rather than the ones that will be played in September.

As team's can be caught distracted by the prospect of final positions, Iglesias believes that the focus must not be on the bigger picture but rather that of respecting the opposition week to week.

"I'm not looking at the ladder and saying we need three points now and we need results to go our way,” he said.

“I'm looking at the game, focus on sticking to the game plan and doing a job every weekend.”

The 2018 season for the Gungahlin United FC women's premier league side was always going to be one of change.

Alterations to personnel on and off the field could have seen United drop off from last year but Iglesias believes this "re-design" has given the organisation a chance at a top four finish once again.

"With the amount of change that we went through, I think the primary goal was to play finals footy," Iglesias said.

"Gungahlin United's goal by default, is to make finals.”

“So we said, if we can at least make it to the final four and give ourselves a shot, then we could go all the way."

With the top four race very much on against Canberra Olympic and even Woden-Weston, Iglesias is far from surprised in the competitiveness of the competition this season and believes that a much wider spread of talent amongst teams has made the league very close and very exciting.

With the likes of Melissa Bunker, Charlotte Lynch and Kailey Tonini among others coming in to form at the pointy end of the season for United, Iglesias is very pleased with the ability of his side to rise as one on any occasion.

"We have no single ‘flagship’ player, which I think make us very hard to plan against,” he said.

On any given day, one of my girls could have an off day, which they are entitled to, and the whole team will step up for them.”

Iglesias is sure no matter the result at the end of the season, every team that makes it to the final four has earned their right to be there.
