Olympic break slump with win over Wanderers

Canberra Olympic 2 (Sally Rojahn 9’, Grace Basser-Silk 39’) def. Woden-Weston 1 (Kathryn Conroy 70’)

Canberra Olympic got on back the winners list with a 2-1 win over Woden-Weston FC at O’Connor on Sunday afternoon.

The first half began as an end to end affair, with both sides looking to attack early. Celina Gayer had the best early chance of the match as her rasping effort struck the frame of goal but the Wanderers struggled to make the most of their early attacking forays,

Just 2 minutes later, Olympic countered and the ball came to Sally Rojahn outside the area and she struck a curling effort into the top corner of Harriet Gee’s goal to put her side into a one-nil lead.

Rojahn was important throughout the half, but Woden-Weston continued to do much of the attacking with Anna Vandenbroucke and Sarah Whitfield dangerous when pushing forward in space.

It mattered for naught though six minutes before the break as the hosts pulled off another heist on the counter-attack as Gee fumbled the ball into the path of Grace Basser-Silk who fired home to send Olympic into the sheds up by two goals.

The second half began in a similar vein to the first as Wanderers burst out of the gates, but again they struggled to take chances when presented up front.

It was not until the 70th minute that they did get on the scoresheet though, and pulled themselves back into the match.

Kathryn Conroy found herself on the ball a long way out and she looked immediately for goal with a long, raking effort.

Gabby O’Brien was caught off her line and was unable to get back far enough, only able to parry the ball over the line as she rushed back towards goal.

But the Wanderers were unable to make further inroads and only opened the door for Olympic as they poured forward in search of an equaliser, and the game stayed goalless for the final 20 minutes.

Woden-Weston now face a tough ask against the Canberra United Academy in round nine, a side they shipped eight goals to in round seven, and Olympic take on Tuggeranong United.
